Turn off backgrounds in e (right click on the desktop to get to the e
settings menu; alternatively, if you have the legacy e-conf installed, you
can do it from within there - just run it from the e settings menu as well).
Then open gnome control center and turn on backgrounds and select the one
you want. Not sure, but I think you may be stuck with one background for
all desktops if you use the Gnome caplet to do the selection. With e, I
know that you can set each of your desktop's backgrounds separately.
Sincerely,
William F. Helke

After I installed E16 I found that it overrode all my gnome
backgrounds. How do I get them back? Thanks
P.S. I'm running October Gnome
