I solved this problem, but it isn't pretty. Apparently, this option only
works if the Gnome debs were installed. Since I compiled it myself, the
update-menus script for Gnome was not installed. I dropped in the one from
the 1.0.9 debs and everything works fine now.

I recommend that you get the update-menus script from the Debian
maintainer and include it in the source distribution.
