As an E user I agree. Gnome would be/is more user friendly/faster if it's run with a more intigrated/lighter weight WM. At the moment, it looks as though Sawmill is this WM.

In defense of E, E's goal differs from that of Gnome. E may slow Gnome down, but the reverse is also true.
Calling E overkill for just providing windw borders is silly. Saying it's not the best suted WM for gnome is not.
