I looked at a SuSE 6.1 system and they install into the following
locations (using all the config switches gnome-config has):
--prefix          /opt/gnome
--exec-prefix     /opt/gnome
--bindir          /opt/gnome/bin
--sbindir         /opt/gnome/sbin
--libexecdir      /opt/gnome/libexec
--datadir         /opt/gnome/share
--sysconfdir      /etc/opt/gnome
--sharedstatedir  /opt/gnome/com
--localstatedir   /var/lib
--libdir          /opt/gnome/lib
--infodir         /opt/gnome/info
--mandir          /opt/gnome/man
--includedir      /opt/gnome/include

As you can see there is more than /opt/gnome.
