FWIW, the tickastat_applet from http://gqview.netpedia.net or
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Haven/5235/ has a module
for that (among other usefule things). From the README file:

|   - Core dump catcher: Monitors a path for core dumps, when one is found the
| 	core is renamed with a time stamp and a gdb backtrace is logged
| 	or (optionally) displayed.
