changing WMs

Hello
I'm currently runing GNOME with Enlightenment but I want to explore
others. I've downloaded IceWM and Sawmill and had no problems compiling
and installing (make install) them. But how can I run them? There is a
file default.wm in .gnome but GNOME ignores changes in it.
So can anybody tell me what I have to do??
