the gnome guys are actually quite a great help!  you have to just
understand (and i think this is true with a great many forums) how to ask
questions and how to appreciate the styles of the different peoples.

i've had a great many dealings with the Linux community (and many other
communities) and know that there are certain things that set each one off.

regardless...there is no reason that starting off on the wrong foot (no
Gnome pun intended) has to keep this relationship from going sour.  there
are some amazing resources on this list that you won't get anywhere (in
any OS environment) else.  

just my big mouth's two cents.
