really odd problem

hey gang!

here's a really odd problem: 

running Oct gnome with RH 6.0 today i rebooted cause of a network problem
(don't ask ;-) ) and when the gnome panel started it kept showing up then
dissapearing.  i have a sound that plays for Gnome startup and it was
looping until the panel finally bought the bullet and gave up.  

i was running an .xinitrc file with the following entries:

exec afterstep &
gnome-session

when i got rid of that file and changed the gnome theme from Soul-trip to
Stone all was fine.

on a related gnote:  the Soul-trip theme was doing something really wonky
(that was actually cool) the other night.  when i would open up the gnome
main menu the menu was transparent!  when i would drag my mouse up the
menu the background image (the one for Soul-trip) would appear.  is there
a way to make the gnome menus and themes transparent?  it was go so well
with my current desktop!

anyway...i'd submit a bug report but i'm ashamed to admit i've never done
it and have yet to look into the 'how' of that process.
