don't think that's it.  i just reinstalled slackware, and
recompiled/installed all libraries clean.  i'm running gnome-libs-1.0.55
(i believe... or is it .57) and gdk-pixbuf 0.6.0.  i compiled gdk-pixbuf
with no options sent to ./configure.  perhaps i should try
--disable-modules?
