problem with gnome print

I'm using YDL CS1.2 with gnome, and trying to get gnumerics to work. When I
try to start gnumerics, it answers that the gnome print has a problem with the
file /usr/share/fonts/fontmap
I've had a look at it, and apart from a pair of x mark-up tags it's empty.
What should be in this file, paths to fonts?
