ls --color crashes gnome-terminal

In fact it crashes _all_ the gnome terminals that are currently
running. 
 xterm and her kin are not effected. 

This started to happen after I "upgraded" to redhat 6.2

I was able to see this much:

cliff@pigpen cliff]$ gnome-terminal &
[1] 11502

( then in the new terminal->  ls --color or any colorized shell command) 

[cliff@pigpen cliff]$ Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter
attributes)

I am using the XIG X server, but aside from that, everything is stock.
