gmc + other weirdness

Howdy. Hoping someone knows what's going on-

I've installed gnome from the source- works very well when logged in 
as root, but not so well as a user.

When logged in as a user, gmc gives continual warnings that the 
SaveYourselfCommand is not responding. I can't log out of gnome and 
go back to X (except force quitting via control-command-delete) and 
sound is non existant. When I try to open the sound mixer, it says no 
mixer can be found.

Yet everything works peachy as root.

Anybody know the issue is and how to resolve it?
