Now, I must report that after 777ing the DOC directory
I am still seeing the non-functional-gnomecc-sawfish-section
problem. I can add that selecting certain sections *does*
lead to a CC lock-up, where others are just blank.
I will have to use enlightenment until I can do as Gordon
suggests.
One thing that a graphical installer handles that I will miss
is dependency checking.
I personally confirmed/upgraded rep, imlib, and any other
lib required by sawfish, but this must remain a concern.
OK, I am off and thank you all for being understanding in the
face of such newbie issues!

I haven't had good luck updating sawfish using helix-update. Try
downloading the rpms from helix code, then update them yourself, outside
of X.
