It is a very common, and sensible practice to split software installed
as part of the system and software installed locally. That is why we
have /usr/local in the first place. Gnome should adapt better to
accomodate this way of doing things.
Now one has to manually link /usr/local/lib/*Conf.sh to /usr/lib and
also /usr/local/share/gnome/apps to /usr/share/gnome/apps to get the
menu entries. There are probably other pitfalls as well.
