Compiling gnome-libs

Pls forgive me if this is an inappropriate forum for this question and
point the right way if needed...
I have successfully compiled imlib and
`/usr/local/bin/imlib-config --version` returns 1.9.8.
However if I run ./configure for gnome-libs-1.0.53 then it terminates
notifiying me that /usr/local/bin/imlib-config can't be found.
Any hints?
