can't login with root or user after 1.2 upgrade

Hello,

I've tried looking for a solution in the archives but as far as I can see,
all problems with login relate to the user account.  I updated to gnome 1.2
last night and after finishing the installation I'm unable to get past the
login screen.  I enter the user name or root and password and it just
returns me to the login again.  I can get somewhere with failsafe and
another level but all else fails.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.
