anyway to configure my display in full 800x600mode

hi ...having this problem with my notebook running
Gnome ...
I've set the resolution to 800x600
but my notebook monitor just refuse to display the real
800x600 mode...
instead, it's running in virtual 800x600
"meaning u need to scroll out of the 640x480 screen to reach the
rest of the 800x600 space"

my notebook monitor is 12 inch ....
and video card memory is 4 mb ...

is there any setting that i miss out?
it;s my first try at using gnome desktop
