GDM Letting X Die

When i use XDM, after logging out, it looks like the X server
doesn't quit, but XDM reuses it. I'm not sure if that's what's
happening or not, but that's what it looks like. When i use GDM,
after logging out my monitor switches to text mode and back to
graphics mode quickly, which i doubt is good for it.

Can GDM be made to behave like XDM?
