This is an X problem, not a gnome one. As you said, X is badly
configured.
WHen it loads, and the monitor goes nuts. Hit ctrl-alt-f1 then login on
the console, swap the XF86Config and try again. You can switch VTs with
ctrl-alt-f# (X usually starts on 7).
