upgrade to 1.2, no more icons

I just finished recompiling gnome 1.2 for my RH6.2 based system, and
installing it.  After a reboot, I don't have any icons on the main panel.
That is, no foot menu, no gnome-terminal icon, nothing.  The icon, at least
for gnome-terminal, does exist, and it shows up in the properties dialog
just fine.  Anybody know how to fix this, it's MUCH ugly.  Oh, as a side
note, GNOME seems to take about 15% longer to start than it did on 1.0.x
series, anybody else noticed this?
