Well I am officially stumped. I have the same versions you do, but my
control center setup is quite different.
Alrighty, alternate ways :
1. Choose Settings -> Session -> Startup Hint from the main menu.
2. Change the settings to your preference.
OR
1. Open up the ~/.gnome/Gnome file in a text editor.
2. Find the section that looks like this (it's near the top):
[Login]
RunHints=true
HintsAreFortune=false
HintsAreMotd=false
MotdFile=
2. Change the settings to your preference.
Personally, I like keeping the gnome hints and enabling the HintsAreFortune
option. That way I can read fortunes why I wait for my session to fully
start up.
