In response to the question by Brad cramer,
xscreensaver doesn't seem to work whichever user I am. When I click on preview I
get a blank screen over which I can move my mouse and which stays until I click
and when it comes on after the set time it goes off the first time I move
the mouse. Thank you to everyone who replied to my mail,
