I had a hanging system that was causing memory corruption errors on
some production software that ran constantly.  I deleted the .gnome
directory and let the newer version of Gnome set that up again.  I
also don't use as many applets.  Try blowing away all .gnome
directories and starting up again and seeing if that helps.
