Please help: keyboard mapping

Can someone please help me!
I'm trying to change the keyboarding mapping in Gnome to en_UK but cannot
find how to do this. When I'm in BASH (before starting Gnome) the keyboard
mapping is correctly set to en_UK. However as soon as I startx and enter
GNOME, the keyboard mapping goes to en_US.
Can someone please help me
I also apologise if this is the incorrect group for asking such questions.
