The symbolic link ~/.gnome-desktop/fd0 is linked to
"/mnt/floppy", which is a directory.

Try this:
cd ~/.gnome-desktop
rm -f fd0
ln -s /mnt/floppy fd0
then log out and back in (not strictly necessary, but simpler
than trying to describe the other ways). You should now see a folder
icon called "fd0". If your version of gmc is a recent one, you should
be able to change this to the floppy icon by right-clicking on the
icon, then selecting "Properties". One of the panels allows you to
change the icon.
