Esound required to compile gnome-media?

In the past, I have compiled gnome without esound, but when compiling
gnome-media-1.2 the compilation failed, looking for esd.h. Shouldn't esound be
optional for compiling gnome? I would rather not have to deal with it taking
over my sound card and causing problems!
