Installing Gnome on Solaris 8

I can't get the installer program beyond the 0%/0% activity bars saying
"Preparing to install packages" on an Ultra10 running Solaris 8 =O(
I've tried over the net loading, and I've tried aiming it at a local copy of all
the files I'd FTP'd over - no luck. All that's left is trying to get a Solaris
version of RPM (which I think I've seen) and trying to install by hand =OZ
