gmc unkillable?

If someone could clarify a small issue for me -

I was puzzled to observe gmc running as a background process on my
Linux RedHat Box.

If I try to remove it I actually get a new gmc-process in a live window.

Why is this setup this way? - or should it not be like this?
If this is normal where is it setup?
