Want Meta_R to go to emacs as such

I'm sure this is a pretty simple incantation... for the guru who knows
the right incantation. Anyway, I am trying to force myself to use Alt
chording (for emacs meta-*) to reduce strain on my wrists and left
pinkie. However, whenever I hit right Alt-*, emacs doesn't seem to see
the Alt- at all, just the whatever (so Alt_R-x gets just the x). I have
already tried

xmodmap -e 'keycode 113=Alt_L Meta_L'
xmodmap -e 'keycode 126=Alt_L Meta_L'

(Yes, I'm desperate enough to try to fake the right one into the left
one.) xev STILL reports a fscking Mode_switch! What am I doing wrong?
