Gimp (1.1.27-helix1) & sane & Debian

Has anyone managed to acces his scanner with Debian and Helix Gimp
installed?

my System is Debian 2.2 (potato)

I am trying to acces my scanner via xscanimage or xsane, but it didn't
work so far:

I have Helix Gnome installed and Gimp version 1.1.27-helix1.
There isn't a Helix package of sane-gimp1.1 or xsane-gimp1.1, so I
installed the ones from Debian (tried both: potato and woody), 
but they don't work with the Helix version of Gimp.
Also, I cannot use the standalone sane or xsane package because they
conflict with gimp.

any ideas?
