If I read your email correctly, your configuration using the desktop
setting tool should have worked, but did not for some reason -- it is
a bit flaky, so you should create a custom ~/.xscreensaver file by
hand -- mine is:

timeout: 72000
programs:\
galaxy -root\n\
\n
------------------------------cut here------------------------------

You would use xmatrix instead of galaxy or course.
