gdm overwriting my .xsession

OK, I am going insane. I think that gdm is overwriting my .xsession file. 
All I know is that every time I edit .xsession it gets overwritten with the 
same thing. The only line in it is exec enlightenment. It might not be gdm 
but I don't know what else is could be. Maybe elightenment, who knows. Has 
anyone else had this problem? I am no longer executing gnome and am just 
trying to start enlightenment but the problem was happening before as well. 
I am using the mandrake 7.1 distro and all that implies.
