GNOME app file choosers and hidden directories

Hi all,

There seems to be a general problem with the file choosers (requesters)
in GNOME apps, for example GNOME PIM 1.2.0, Balsa 0.9.3, etc.

Basically I can't seem to get it to show hidden directories, i.e.
directories beginning with a "."   One of two things happen - either
the app ignores my request, or two, the app crashes/hangs.

FYI, I'm using GNOME 1.2.0 on SGI IRIX 6.5.9m.

Am I just missing some kind of a setting here?
