gdm problem - no keyboard input

I have recently installed Gnome from .debs on a Woody box but

when invoking gdm i have no keyboard input for the login window, mouse works

fine.  I am not running any other graphical login manager <xdm> having disabled

it in my init startup script. If anyone can suggest the problem i would be greatly

appreciative.
