RESOLVED Re: looking up internet address for hostname hangs up my machineafter gnome login

Thanks Marius for the suggestion. Ur suggestion led me to to the cause of
the
problem. I had "dns files" for the hosts entry in nsswitch.conf. I changed
the
order to "files dns" and it works now.
