I think the decision to put the beta packages separate was so that
people didn't run apt-get and get them by mistake. I think this was
a good decision. Beta software is, well. Beta :)
I haven't seen packages of later Gnome betas though.
I probably avoided the mix and match because I added the beta line to
apt/sources.list, and commented out all the normal ones, because I had
not updated in a good while. I didn't want to get bogged down in all
the other stuff; I just wanted the beta packages. So I ran apt-get
with just the Ximian lines visible, not the main Debian ones; and
then uncommented the main Debian ones again.
This was sheer "make things easy by avoiding upgrading loads at once"
behaviour, but it seems to have saved me from quite a few problems.
