Cant compile gtk-engines - old gtk still on disk. how to remove

Hi im trying to compile gtk-engines having just compiled gtk+-1.2.9

but when i try to i get this message

'gtk-config --version' returned 1.2.9, but GTK+ (1.2.8)
*** was found! I

Where can i find the files that are causing the problem and remove them ???
