This may be yet another manifestation of a bug in libzvt (one of the 
bits underlying gnome-terminal). You can read all about it in the

And if you think you have information which isn't covered there,
please add it (you'll need a bugzilla account, but they're easy.)

If I have misunderstood and you're seeing it in gedit, not in
gnome-terminal, then opening a bug against gedit would be great.
(I haven't searched, but it's entirely possible there's one
there already, so if you have time to query for gedit/2.x/i18n
bugs first you may find it.)
