Why exactly isn't CUPS the way to go?

Also, regarding a print GUI, I rather like what gpr from 
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lpr does, but I'm not sure if anyone 
maintains it any longer (Thomas Hubbell no longer does), and of course, we 
want an integrated dialogue rather than a separate app. (Or both, really.)
