In text or GUI mode? In the GUI, if you have XF86 installed, try
pressing [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[+] and [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[-], using the plus and
minus keys on your numeric keypad. This should cycle you through
your available resolutions.
In order to make X start with the most desirable reesolution, play
with the order of the resolutions ("Modes") in the "Display"
subsections of the "Screens" section in your XF86Config file.
