First check your path as a user
it should include the path to wherever your gnome2 install is
in my case it is

PATH=/usr/local/gnome/bin:/usr/local/gnome/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/mike/bin:/home/mike/bin

to make sure do export PATH=$GNOME2PATH:$PATH
where $GNOME2PATH is where gnome2 is
