Yes, gnome breaks ***very badly*** if you fill your partition.

I had this happen to me a couple weeks ago, and my configuration was
completely trashed.  What is more, I could not even log in until
I freed space (as root).

Evolution also loses its cookies badly if it runs out of space.
This is even more criminal, as it is often your personal database
that gets lost.

The other very obscure bad breakage Gnome exhibits is if you
happen to need to change a user's uid.  Unless you run a find
over the whole system and change the UID everywhere, you'll
generally have lots of obscure usage.
