Small icons in workspace switcher

Hello,
I am using Gnome 2.2 on Debian unstable. In the panel on the lower side
of the screen I have added a workspace switcher element with six
workspaces areas, in two orizontal sequences. Some applications, when
opened, show a small icon on the rectangle representing the
application's window in the workspace, but the strange thing is that for
some of them, i.e. Evolution, the icon appears regardless of the
position in the workspace area, while for others, i.e. Xchat, the icon
appears only if the window is in one of three workspace in the lower
horizontal sequence.
Has anybody else noticed this, and is there a solution?
