Cannot set desktop fonts

When I display the fonts preferences window I cannot select any of the
fonts. 
I get the following error messages if I start it via xterm.

I have just finished building gnome2 from scratch and all applications
cpmpiled with no problems including libglade
Has anybody any ideas
