According to
http://www.freedesktop.org/standards/desktop-entry-spec/desktop-entry-spec.html the Path field of a .desktop file gives it the working directory. I just tried this with gnome-terminal and it didn't appear to work (perhaps because gnome-terminal cd's to $HOME by default?).
