gnome 2.2.0; glibc-2.3.1 and gnome-session

I just installed gnome 2.2.0. Compiled it all from source on a Debian 
testing PC which is using glibc-2.2.5.  Everything compiled, but when I 
tried to run gnome session it errors saying that it needs glibc-2.3.1.  
So I downloaded and installed it in /usr/local/glibc-2.3.1.

How do I get gnome-session to link to it?  Can I do it without 
recompiling?  If I have to recompile, how do I get it to link to it? 
I've tried ./configure --libdir=/usr/local/glibc-2.3.1/lib, but that 
didn't work.
