gnome2 - libXft

hi!

i have installed gnome2 today via debian apt-get from the current 
unstable distribution. when starting gnome via the xserver 
startupscript, i get a glimpse of the splashscreen and then fall back to 
shell. when i try to start gnome-panel from within xf86/windowmaker, i 
can see the panels shortly then they disappear, leaving this error:

gnome-panel: relocation error: /usr/X11R6/lib/libXft.so.2: undefined 
symbol: XRenderCompositeText8

maybe someone can give me a clue to solve this ?
i thought that it might even be something so simple as a missing font 
... has there been any change in the default font for gnome2 ?
