japanese input, english menus?

Hi,

I can only do both: change menu language from
english to japanese and enable input for japanese
characters (xim / kinput2). 

How can I keep the english language for
everything, but enable input of japanese
characters? All tutorials on the net change
LANG or LC_MESSAGES to ja_JP,
but I don't want that.

LANG is set to en_EN.UTF-8, so the encoding
can accept japanese characters.
