Gnome Fonts or what?

I'm have a strange problem on my RH9 system. I run a Tcl/tk app call
tkabber that connects to a jabber server.

It is a simple install, but it requires BWidget-1.4.1 or above. This is
a simple untar to a directory that tcl recognizes. It says /usr/lib is
it. I also requires tcllib v1.2 or above. I have 1.3 installed from
distro rpm. It installs it in /usr/share. All my other systems I have
untared it into /usr/lib. Not sure if any of this is relevant because
if it doesn't find either it errors out the the command line.

When I start tkabber it starts up the the apps fonts in the window are
strange. All letters have a little box in between them. Everything
with text looks this way. Even the menu.

I think it is the font of gnome, because if I use ssh to connect to this
system from another. Then do ssh to x forward the tkabber display to
my RH8 system the display of text in the window is fine.

I'm not sure how to fix this or even where to look. Anyone have any
ideas that might help me track this down?
