Ok, I think I found the problem. Apparently, somewhere during the
build:
  $ /opt/gnome22/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule
didn't get run for desktop_gnome_interface.schemas. Actually, it
doesn't look like this got run for lots of schemas under
/opt/gnome22/etc/gconf/schemas.
